How long until every IP gets an anime?
That’s right, two Blizzard IP’s are in the news today as new information is spreading of potential TV properties for them. This info was discovered on the LinkedIn for Nick van Dyk, co-president of Activision-Blizzard, and gives an idea of what to expect.
Nick van Dyk’s LinkedIn confirmed his involvement in an upcoming animated adaptation of Diablo “rendered in anime-style.” The information also shows that it will be available worldwide through streaming on Netflix when it’s released. There were rumors of this series for a while now but nothing was very concrete, so it’s good to have this confirmation of its existence. It’s worth mentioning that the idea of a Diablo anime definitely seems similar to the Castlevania Netflix series, given both series have similar dark fantasy themes. The comparison has lead a few people on social media to wonder if Blizzard is attempting to replicate the success of Castlevania but there’s no telling.
With Diablo aside, the other announcement came with a description of the new Overwatch IP. The announcement from van Dyk stated he has “developed and sold an animated series based on Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise.”
Frankly the Overwatch animated series comes as less of a surprise given how many animated shorts Blizzard has already made, but now we have a more formal confirmation of it. There was no information however on who the series was sold to, leading to speculation that the series may not be on Netflix like the Diablo anime. It is possible that the Overwatch series could be sold to Amazon or Hulu for exclusivity rights but for now there is no telling.
That’s all the information we have at the moment. For now we’ll have to wait for new developments on the Diablo anime, as well as what platform purchased the Overwatch animated series. We’ll post any new updates to EscapeZero as they come to light, have a great day.
