SEGA does what Nintendone: Sonic the Hedgehog has the biggest opening weekend for a video game movie ever.

I’m not making a speed pun or ring pun, you can’t make me.

An unexpected development occurred this Valentine’s Day weekend. I got a date and a video game movie did the best at the box office. Honestly this was something a lot of people weren’t sure would work out given all the past evidence that this would fail. But luckily this time, my date didn’t ghost me.

Okay I’ll stop but what I said could also apply to the Sonic movie as well. I feel confident in saying not many people were expecting a Sonic the Hedgehog movie to do as well as it did at the box office, even after the studio reworked the Sonic design after fan backlash last year. But I can safely say after watching the movie myself, it was a pretty good movie.

Box office for Valentines Day 2020.

I really just can’t believe how well this movie did given all that was working against it. February is known for low movie turnout historically so that was a hurdle to jump. The ever present stigma against video game movies, which to be fair isn’t entirely undeserved, filling people with doubts. And not to be rude but… It’s Sonic. Sonic is an iconic character sure but there’s a lot of bad history with the franchise too.

But I’m going to stop focusing on the negatives now. I’m happy that we’ve gotten another good video game movie. Sonic the Hedgehog even surpassed last years surprise hit Detective Pikachu which had an opening weekend box office of $54,300,000. That means that as of right now, Sonic the Hedgehog has the #1 video game movie opening weekend ever.

In a way, this Sonic design saved the entire movie.

What does this mean for the future? Not sure. It’s quite possible that the Sonic movie will receive a sequel. The movie itself is made more for a young demographic so I can 100% see them making more movies to capitalize on it. Let’s not even talk about all the potential merchandise sales. We’ll have to wait and see. But what did you think of the Sonic movie? Did you like it, hate it, wish you never saw the floss dance? Let us know in the comments.
