A few months ago, famous Youtuber Pewdiepie recently went with donating $50,000 to the Anti Defamation League. A lot of confusion and questions arose from this and, well, for good reason. Wasn’t ADL responsible for Disney to cancel their deal with Pewdiepie? Weren’t they starting the accusations that he was altright, a nazi and racist? Then rolled with it to manipulate thousands into believing it? Well yes, most of that was caused directly by them. So why would Pewdiepie donate a video’s worth of revenue to these people? Some say it was disassociating with the Altright entirely. Pewdiepie has always been left-leaning when it comes to politics so this isn’t a bad move at all. Others say it was a publicity stunt. I’d say the first but also the last one: where many ADL officials were removing comments from people voicing their concerns both on his subreddit and twitter. He was exposing pure censorship while also showing a middle finger to the unironic altright that keeps pretending that Pewdiepie is their god or something.
Now that would’ve been all fine and dandy. It’s a perfect two-birds-with-one stone move that shows a middle finger to the assholes that think he gives them a platform to stand on while also exposing the ADL’s bullshit. Then he openly states that he’s no longer donating the 50k… so now it’s just pure confusion from there. Why did he try donating in the first place? Why did he take it back? This entire event is a mystery. Is Pewdiepie spineless and not sure what to do? Well… It’s a difficult question to answer, in truth.
According to a reddit post with a tweet from Pewdiepie (which was deleted). It reads: “Misrepresenting headlines of me has led me down a path of twists with MSM for years now. Previously it hasn’t bothered me much, I know who I am. But, after the Christ Church travesty a few months ago, my own clash with MSM was manipulated as a tool for destruction. I’m not ok with this situation any longer and I’ve felt responsible to make changes. Making a donation to ADL doesn’t make sense to everyone, especially since they’ve outright spoken against me. I wanted to show publicly that I can move past it and move on. I think that it’s important, this isn’t my fight anymore.”
The reason he was donating is because he felt responsible for the Christ Church Attack. It didn’t sit right with him and for a good reason. Someone ending lives and ruining even more in your name will always put you on edge, no matter who you are. It’s disturbing, it’s disgusting. So why would he take it back?? Well. It’s because he was reminded of clip that he spoke of a while ago about donating to improve the image. “[They told me that I needed to do Jewish charities] and I said No. Not because I don’t want to, but because it will seem like the most disingenuous thing, ever. You’re not doing it because you want to, you’re doing it to save your brand and people are smart enough to see through those things.” He must’ve been reminded that donating, despite that he was doing it to move past all this, it seemed to many more that he was doing it to save his image, which wasn’t the case at all. But fans left and right have been waiting for answers.
Essentially PewDiePie donated because he wanted to move past the Christ Church shooting and the unironic altright who weaponize his feud with MSM. He took it down most likely because he was reminded that, even if he was doing this for himself, he looks very fake doing so and it won’t resolve anything. What happened is that he made mistakes, and he tried to fix them. Will it work? Well, there’s the large left crowd of Twitter claiming he’s a nazi simply because of a Jew joke and inviting Ben Shapiro on his channel (despite being Jewish). So it won’t. But at least both situations were of genuine concern for fans and Jewish people alike.
